Mamas and Their Babies
We are very fortunate to have several mom cows and their offspring. Longhorn moms are caring and protective. Even the Longhorn cows without offspring (Dinah as an example) are protective of the young. As the moms graze, there always seems to be an adult watching the “nursery”. I thought someone was joking once when they called it a calf nursery but I do think such a thing exists. The babies tend to nap a lot early on and they are never without a protector.
Friends visited during Thanksgiving and we decided to drive out to the pasture where the babies were napping. Sure enough there was an adult cow hanging with the babies. As we got a little closer, the nursery mama stared at us and started to walk in our direction. We got the hint and relocated. Longhorns are extremely docile and will generally let you near their babies but we realized that although they knew us, they didn’t know our friends and thus the reason for the extra security.
The most heartbreaking sound is the wail from a mama looking for her baby. They become hoarse from wailing so much. It goes on for days and it’s the sound of pure anguish. Perhaps it happens with all bovine breeds but its just something that you cannot forget.
Thus the push for us to find forever homes for our calves. I’m learning a lot about the longhorn breed and to my astonishment, I never knew that the breed almost became extinct in the 1920s. More on this later but for now check out our babies!
