Snow on the Prairie

We noticed this very nice looking upright “plant” that popped up here and there in the pastures. I was hoping it was something fragrant like Eucalyptus. I had no clue if Eucalyptus grows in Texas. But after some research and utilizing some plant ID apps, I realized this “plant” is Snow on the Prairie. What a cool name. There’s also a very similar Snow on the Mountain but my understanding is Snow on the Mountain is more predominant in Central Texas.

A good sign that livestock won’t eat a weed (or forbs as they are also called) is the fact that there are plenty of these standing in a field. I’ve since learned that this forb may be poisonous to livestock. It’s amazing how the cows eat around this plant. Perhaps its a scent or just innate wisdom but the cows really avoid areas of the pasture where this grows in abundance.

I must admit it’s almost majestic to see a “colony” of Snow on the Prairie at the height of it’s glory. Pretty white flowers start appearing late summer and when the wind blows there’s a wave of white against very green pastures.

Unfortunately this one had to go down as well in 2021. Easy to pull and a little sad to end it’s run but it had to be done. We will stay tuned to see if and when we see the return of Snow on the Prairie.
